Trello isn't a tool specifically designed for onboarding, but it can certainly help you smoothen your onboarding process by using it in a certain way. Basically Trello is a project management tool developed for collaborating on projects. And as a free lightweight tool, it is certainly a good fit for small companies.

Trello is projectmanagent with a kanban style layout. A stranger in our midst compared to other traditional onboarding tools perhaps. But basically designing an onboarding process is like a project: You have to map out certain touch points and activities for yourself, the company and the new employee. Trello can help you do this perfectly, and you can share your projectboard with everyone who will have a part in the onboarding process.

Off course you will miss a few features "real" onboarding tools offer, like interacting with your new employee even before the first day, or offering a real branded experience, but when you are still low in employee numbers you can often give your new colleague a bit more attention yourself.
